Exploring Nursing

  • Basic overview of careers as a medical doctor (allopathic, M.D., or osteopathic, D.O.), nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and medical assistant.

Over the last ten years, we have averaged 10 students/graduating class who go onto careers into nursing. In the last few years, almost 40% have done so by matriculating into direct entry Master of Nursing (MSN) Programs  at places like Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, MGH Institute of Health, and the University of Arizona. For other students, they complete their Skidmore degree and then enroll in an accelerated BSN program. For accelerated BSN programs, NYU remains a popular choice given the articulation agreement Skidmore has with the NYU Meyers College of Nursing.

While at Skidmore, pre-nursing students (pre-MSN or pre-accelerated BSN) complete their nursing pre-requisite courses, shadow health care professionals, and volunteer or work in clinical settings to be well-prepared and informed before entering a nursing program. Pre-nursing students can major in anything while they are at Skidmore. Often  pre-nursing students major in Psychology, Health & Human Physiological Sciences, Biology, Neuroscience, and Chemistry with a Biochemistry concentration.

TESTS

Please read over the admissions requirements of the programs you are interested in to see if they require or prefer the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). If needed, sign-up and take the GRE in time for the admissions window you are targetting. There is a fee-reduction program that discounts the exam by 50% for those who qualify. Please note: You must apply for fee assistance well in advance of taking the GRE, at least 30 days.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science Nursing (ASBN) programs are typically four semesters or about 15 months if you take classes over winter and summer terms. Similar to other careers in the health professions, students complete coursework and clinical hours. In addition, you can earn credit hours that count toward a master’s degree.  ASBN-MSN, BSN-DNP, and BSN-PhD options can allow students to efficiently complete credits to earn multiple degrees.

There are also direct-entry MSN programs. A doctor of nursing practice (DNP) is another advanced degree to consider.

Many programs will allow you to start in the Spring or Fall term. If you plan to graduate Skidmore a semester early, you may want to start nursing school the Spring after your last semester at Skidmore.
