Student Research Opportunities

Participating in research is a great way for students to apply the physics they learn in class and to learn more about branches of physics they may not otherwise be exposed to while developing critical thinking and communication skills.  Research experience is valuable preparation for any career that Physics students may pursue after graduation and is particularly encouraged if students are considering graduate school. The best way to figure out if you might enjoy a career in research is to try it!

Physics students may participate in research with a faculty member at Skidmore during the fall and/or spring semesters.  Students may also apply for summer research opportunities, either at Skidmore (Faculty Student Summer Research Program) or through an off-campus internship or REU experience.

Students may participate in research as early as second semester of their first year at Skidmore – that is, if you have completed an introductory physics class, you may join a research group!  Our Intermediate Research in Physics course (PY 273) is offered for 1-4 credits, allowing flexibility in the number of hours students may choose to devote to research each week, under the supervision of any member of the Physics faculty.  Senior physics majors may enroll in Senior Research (PY 373) for 3-4 credits; this course fulfills the Senior Experience Coda all-college requirement.
