Advising Appointment
Students are assigned to a Summer Advisor to discuss and review their fall course schedules before registering for courses. Your Summer Advisor will contact you in early June at your Skidmore email account and invite you to set up an individual advising appointment conducted via phone or Zoom.
Getting Things in Order
Be sure that you have already completed the following First-Year Experience (FYE) Checklist items before meeting with your Summer Advisor:
- Academic Interest Form
- Scribner Seminar Selection
- The Directed Self-Placement (DSP) exam for Expository Writing
- The QR Placement Diagnostic for a qualitative reasoning course
Also be sure to send any Advanced Placement (AP) scores or official college transcripts to the Office of the Registrar.
Prepare for Your Appointment
- Read and understand this New Student Advising and Registration Guide.
- Think about possible majors/minors and the first-year courses associated with these academic degree programs.
- Use your knowledge of the degree requirements, academic departments and programs, and the to create a tentative fall course schedule that includes at least 4 courses with 2-3 backup courses.
During Your Appointment
Each first-year student will have an individual advising appointment with a Summer Advisor who is a Skidmore faculty member. During your appointment, you should be prepared to share the following:
- Why you chose to come to Skidmore.
- Your current academic and career goals.
- Your tentative fall course schedule, including the reason for each of your course selections and which degree requirement(s) it satisfies.
Your Summer Advisor will be eager to learn more about you! Summer Advisors will be happy to answer any questions that you have at this stage. You will also have the opportunity to follow up with your Summer Advisor via email prior to the end of June if you need additional support once your registration period has opened.
