Students compost

Turning food scraps into rich compost may sound gross, but for Skidmore’s student compost managers, it’s the perfect blend of fun and sustainability. Rachel Entin-Bell '27, Zak Maxey ’27, and Chris Schuckers ’25 share how this stinky work became their dream campus job.

During his senior year, Alex Blaker ’08 boarded a plane for a study-abroad program in Australia; he returned with an idea for Tech Supplier, a worldwide distributor of consumer electronics. The experience is an example of Skidmore's entrepreneurial spirit.

Skidmore Cares 

‌Skidmore Cares — the annual campus-wide effort to support individuals and families in need in the Saratoga community — is now in its 19th year. Visit the Skidmore Cares website to learn about ways to support local community organizations. Collected items can be dropped off at Scribner House Carriage House from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 20 and 21. A collection box will be available outside the carriage house for after-hours donations.

Strategic planning office hours

The Skidmore community is invited to speak with President Conner and Vice President of Strategic Planning and Institutional Diversity Joshua Woodfork, who will hold office hours from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6. All faculty, staff, and students may request a 10-minute, in-person appointment to share their thoughts about Strategic Planning and other matters. To register, please email presoff@skidmore.edu. In addition, Associate Professor of Economics Smriti Tiwari, faculty vice chair of strategic planning, will hold separate office hours to hear your thoughts on strategic planning from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25; from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30; from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6; and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13. To register, please email stiwari@skidmore.edu. ‌Call for white paper proposals for Strategic Plan ‌

‌â¶ÄŒâ€ŒWhat do you think is most important to advancing Skidmore as a leading liberal arts college over the next five years and beyond? The community is invited to submit one-page white papers with ideas for what we should add, expand, continue, revise, or sunset to support our future, weighing-in on any of the five strategic themes: Creativity and academic excellence; endowment for need-based financial aid; the residential student experience; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and sustainability. Other topics are also welcome. Group submissions are encouraged. Submissions are due by 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15, to planning@skidmore.edu.

‌Tuition Benefit and Tuition Exchange Program Info Session

‌Staff from Admissions, Financial Aid, and Human Resources will lead a workshop addressing admission and financial aid requirements and offering an overview of the Tuition Exchange Program from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Emerson Auditorium. The session should be particularly helpful to Skidmore employees with high school age dependents. Please review the Tuition Exchange Annual Report for information on the 2024-25 academic year.

‌The Skidmore Alumni Association Board of Directors is pleased to invite staff to nominate deserving Skidmore graduates for a number of service and achievement awards as well as several vacant board positions. Nominations are crucial in helping find and celebrate alumni who exemplify the Skidmore spirit.

‌Boo bags for sale this week 

‌Students in the EN 105 What's in it for me? course are selling boo bags to raise money for hurricane relief. Boo Bags are $20 each and are filled with a variety of treats: Including a mug, candy, snacks, toys, and a pet ghost. Recipients will be notified on Wednesday, Oct. 30, and boo bags will be available for pickup on Halloween. Contact Brenda Pashley-Rabbitt with questions.

‌Projects for Peace Grant for summer 2025 ‌

‌Students can win a $10,000 grant for a peace/social justice project of their own design in summer 2025 (this is the largest single grant opportunity available at Skidmore). Applications are due to Student Academic Services by Jan. 20. Contact Chloe Jaleel for more information.

Skidmore Weekly Bulletin submission procedure and schedule 

Help reduce bulk emails by posting your announcement in Skidmore Weekly Bulletin, which is distributed to all students and employees. Submit announcements and events; lectures, panels, and other academic events; and faculty-staff achievements by completing the appropriate online form. ‌Campus air conditioning

With fall weather temperatures approaching, Facilities Services has begun the process of shutting down the chiller plant. The following buildings will not have air conditioning: Old Dana, Case, Ladd, Bolton, Palamountain, Scribner Library, Barrett, Wait, Tisch, JKB Theater, Jonsson Tower, and Howe Rounds.

Athletics News

Men's/women's swimming and diving and riding are the first teams to begin the winter sports season with competition starting this weekend. The swimming and diving teams open on the road at St. Lawrence and Clarkson, while riding will compete at Siena on Saturday. The rowing teams will take to Fish Creek on Saturday for the annual Head of the Fish Regatta. Also, on Saturday, men's soccer will look to keep its winning streak going when it hosts St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. Wrapping up the weekend, field hockey plays host to local rival Union at 2 p.m. Sunday.
