Skidmore President Philip A. Glotzbach has been named to the board of directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU).

NAICU member institutions鈥攎ore than a thousand鈥攅nroll nine out of every 10 students attending private, nonprofit institutions. These include traditional liberal arts colleges, major research universities, church- and faith-related institutions, historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, single-sex colleges, art institutions, two-year colleges, and schools of law, medicine, engineering, business, and other professions.

Glotzbach began a three-year term as an at-large board member at last month鈥檚 NAICU annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

鈥淣AICU's new board members and officers were selected by their peers because of their expertise in the field, proven leadership, and commitment to America's college students,鈥 said NAICU President David L. Warren. 鈥淭hey assume their responsibilities at a time of great challenge and transformation for American higher education.鈥

NAICU's board sets the association's agenda on federal higher education policy; actively encourages support of NAICU priorities and initiatives; and oversees the association's financial administration.

鈥淣AICU helps to advance the cause of American higher education by providing a strong voice for our independent colleges and universities in national conversations,鈥 said Glotzbach. 鈥淪ervice on the NAICU board will provide a new avenue for gaining information regarding federal higher education policy, as well as an opportunity to participate in shaping NAICU鈥檚 message to both the government and the higher education community. I very much look forward to working with the other members of the NAICU Board and the organization鈥檚 highly competent staff.鈥

Glotzbach has served for nearly 10 years on the executive committee of the Annapolis Group, a consortium of 130 leading national liberal arts colleges, and recently completed a three-year term as chair. He was among 100 college presidents who participated in the White House Summit on College Opportunity in January.

Skidmore鈥檚 president since 2003, Glotzbach has presided over a remarkable era in the institution鈥檚 history. The College has introduced new academic programs, enhanced the strength and diversity of the student body, launched initiatives to better position graduates for their careers, and transformed the campus with renovations, new buildings, and upgraded athletic fields. The College also has fortified its operations and finances and doubled its endowment, thanks in great part to the successful completion of the largest fundraising campaign in its history.
