Brasilidade: Contestations and Culture in Brazil

Brazil, the lone Portuguese-speaking nation of Latin America, is known for its extravagant Carnival, its unique approach to soccer (the beautiful game/ jogo bonito), and its racial hybridity. However, these popular images and cultural representations mask tense political, social, and economic relations and negotiations of different parties over the cultural productions and representations that define Brazil.
This course explores the Brazilian culture and contestations over how it is represented. The course will explore historical accounts, national mythologies, and dive into the class and identity politics that shape how outsiders view Brazil. The course will also engage with films, art, and literature depicting alternative views of Brazilian daily life and experience including feelings of cynicism, resistance, and the proliferation of plastic surgery.
